Cedar wood is gentle and nice on hands. It also has a light, tender texture. Now, heat and pressure are applied to cedar wood to enhance its sturdiness. This might sound like a contradiction, yet the intention is to create furniture works of cedar whose physical characteristics are enhanced, and which fit well into the everyday, casual interior. In short, this is a project to rediscover what cedar wood can do.
This project serves a greater, longer-term purpose as well – to preserve Japan’s lovely forest, which are currently left devastated, and turn them into “genuine forests” accommodating great biodiversity. Reviving such diversity, in turn, should help restoration of the rich diversity of local cultures as well.
